ODYSSEUS was presented by TELESTO at the 1st International Conference on the Security of the Blue Economy (#SEC4BLUEconomy24) convened in Athens on April 23, 2024.
The event shed light at the importance of security in the Blue Economy including a broad range of activities in the maritime industries such as shipping, cruising, and superyachts, and coastal and offshore critical infrastructure like oil and gas exploration platforms, wind and wave farms, subsea pipelines, power and telecommunications cables, and aquaculture farms. Additionally, the security of ports, marinas, and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations was a key focus.
ODYSSEUS objectives were unveiled by TELESTO during the conference. The project aims to improve the efficiency and efficacy of border management by offering citizens with seamless and secure border crossing experiences while also enhancing Border Guard Authorities’ capabilities. ODYSSEUS addresses various security challenges faced by the water borders providing robust strategies and the means to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of critical maritime infrastructure.
The conference gathered experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders from various sectors who engaged in discussions on safeguarding economic activities above and below sea level.
A rising demand for a multifaceted approach to security in the Blue Economy, particularly in light of emerging economic-energy-tourism synergies in the Eastern Mediterranean, was examined and thoroughly discussed during the event. As the maritime sectors expand and interconnect, security risks grow, demanding a collaborative effort to address present and future concerns. By bringing together diverse voices and ideas, the conference aimed to create a unified front to tackle security issues effectively ensuring the resilience and sustainability of maritime activities.
The 1st International Conference on the Security of the Blue Economy set the stage for ongoing dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders in this critical field. Participants emphasised the need for continued innovation, investment in advanced technologies, and robust policy development to safeguard maritime activities.
