From 11th to 12th February 2025, the ODYSSEUS Project successfully conducted the Land Pilot 2 at Komárno, Slovakia, an internal EU border crossing point between Slovakia and Hungary. This pilot demonstration, organized as part of the ODYSSEUS initiative, showcased how advanced digital technologies can revolutionize border management by making processes smarter, faster, and privacy compliant.
The ODYSSEUS Land Pilot 2 was designed to validate cutting-edge solutions aimed at streamlining border control operations. Over these two days, the demonstration rigorously tested a range of innovative technologies, focusing on:
• Pre-registration and DTC issuance to facilitate seamless traveller and vehicle enrolment.
• Multi-layer biometrics-based identity verification to enhance accuracy and security.
• Real-time monitoring with automated alerts using the Decision Support System (DSS).
• AI-powered UAV solutions for automated aerial surveillance and real-time data collection, reducing delays and improving operational efficiency.
Static cameras were deployed for traveler counting and restricted area monitoring, while drones equipped with RGB and thermal imaging executed license plate recognition, people counting, and vehicle type identification, ensuring accurate verification of pre-registered data.
While the ODYSSEUS project led the initiative, several key stakeholders contributed to the pilot’s success. The Police Force of the Slovak Republic (Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic) participated in testing alongside the Hungarian police forces. Additionally, students from the Police Academy in Bratislava were involved, providing valuable insights into the practical application of these technologies.
The ODYSSEUS Land Pilot 2 in Komárno marked a significant step towards modernizing EU border operations. By integrating AI-driven UAV solutions, biometrics, and real-time decision support systems, the project provided a scalable model for the future of smart border management across the European Union.
The outcomes of this pilot will be instrumental in shaping the next phases of the ODYSSEUS Project, driving further innovation in secure and efficient border operations. As the initiative progresses, it will continue to refine and implement technologies that support seamless, high-security border crossings.
