The ODYSSEUS project recently completed the first phase of the Water Pilot in Burgas, Bulgaria, demonstrating how digital identity verification and advanced monitoring technologies can enhance border security while ensuring efficient and seamless border crossings.

From 21 to 24 January 2025, the Water Pilot was executed at the Port of Burgas – Port Bulgaria West  Border Crossing Point, bringing together project partners to test and validate ODYSSEUS technologies in a live operational environment. The pilot focused on identity verification, vehicle screening, and AI-powered monitoring, supporting the transition towards contactless, digital, and privacy-compliant border management.

Key elements tested during the pilot included:

✔ Traveller’s enrolment and issuance the  Digital Travel Credential (DTC)
✔ Traveller’s and vehicle pre-registration and risk assessment through the ODYSSEUS platform
✔ Identity verification at the border via three approaches:
▫ e-MRTD-based verification (traditional passport check)
▫ DTC-based verification (leveraging pre-registered digital identities)
▫ DTC & Biometrics-based verification (integrating individual behavioural patterns for enhanced security)
✔ Monitoring and inspection using static cameras for people counting and vehicle license plates recognition
✔ Border officer registration on the ODYSSEUS platform, providing access to real-time monitoring tools, statistics, and automated alerts

Enhancing Border Security with AI-Powered Intelligence

The pilot featured an integrated Decision Support System (DSS), enabling real-time passenger and vehicle verification, risk assessment, and automated alert generation.

In cases where unauthorised individuals or irregularities were detected, automated alerts were triggered, prompting swift action from border personnel. The system also ensured compliance with GDPR principles, offering privacy-conscious solutions while enhancing security.

Shaping the Future of Border Control

The Burgas Water Pilot represented a significant milestone for ODYSSEUS, demonstrating how smart border control technologies can improve both security and efficiency. By integrating digital identity solutions, AI-driven analytics, and seamless verification processes, ODYSSEUS is paving the way for the future of secure and frictionless travel across European borders.

Further insights from the pilot will contribute to refining ODYSSEUS technologies, ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of border authorities and travellers alike.

Stay updated as the project continues to innovate in smart, secure, and efficient border management.
